Food poisoning is caused by eating contaminated food that is handled or cooked incorrectly before it reaches your plate.
Food can be contaminated by infectious ‘bugs’ (bacteria, viruses, parasites) at any point of growing, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, storing, shipping or preparing. Cross-contamination happens when these harmful ‘bugs’ are transferred from one surface to another.
Researchers have identified more than 250 foodborne diseases. Most of them are caused by a bacteria, viruses, and parasites. However, harmful toxins and chemicals can also contaminate foods and cause food poisoning.
