On January 19, 2023, a group of 70 participants gathered in Valencia's aquarium Oceanogràfic for a test recording of the Spanish television show MasterChef. Unfortunately, 44 of the participants ended up contracting food poisoning. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Health of the Region of Valencia … See More
last Tuesday.

The participants were expecting to taste the dishes prepared by the competing chefs on the show, but instead suffered from food poisoning. One of the participants reported on Twitter that she had contracted symptoms of gastroenteritis, and had to go to the emergency room. She also reported that she lost 10 pounds in three days.

The producer of the show, Shine Iberia, issued a statement saying they are sorry for what happened. They said that this is an “absolutely exceptional case in these 11 years of MasterChef in Spain” and that “the food has been analyzed back to the source with positive results.”

The menu served to the participants included an Indian starter with Valencian clotxina, oyster, mussel, romesco sauce, pesto based on algae, a Thai sea bass Suquet, and a Japanese cheesecake with seaweed.

The incident has provoked outrage among the participants, who have not yet received an apology from the company. The Ministry of Health of the Region of Valencia is currently investigating the source of the food poisoning.

In case you experience vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

My daughter got chicken katsu as she usually gets when we have Japanese food somewhere. I had beef udon and my husband had beef teriyaki. We've eaten here quite a few times and it's changed owners a few times. Last night we ordered our food to take … See More
out and ate at home. As soon as my daughter ate barely half of her food she felt nausea. Her white rice wasn't tasting good she said also. My husband said the teriyaki meat was rubbery. The chicken katsu was a weird texture as well. My udon was ok but had mini shrimp that tasted like stagnant water. I stopped eating it before the rest of my family. My daughter has projectile vomited for 2 hours and has diarrhea! My husband is nauseous and sweating with stomach ache. This is the LAST time we go there.

Update 04/17: I personally became ill with the same symptoms my daughter had a few days later. I had eaten only a small amount of the soup so maybe that's why it took longer to kick in? I puked and uncontrollable diarrhea with sweats and body aches for 3 days! I was at a friend's house during this and they had to help clean me up and by the 3rd day when I was better and finally home, they came down with the same symptoms! Horrible!!  | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Sweating, Stomach Pain

Update January 18, 2023

As of January 18, 2023, 3 people infected with the outbreak strains of Listeria have been reported from three states (CA, MI and NV). All 3 have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. November 17, 2022

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to enoki mushrooms. Investigators are working to identify specific brands of enoki mushrooms that may be linked to these illnesses. As of November 15, 2022, 2 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 2 states (MI and NV). Both have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Sick people’s samples were collected from October 5, 2022, to October 8, 2022.

Enoki mushrooms are white and have long, thin stems. They are often sold in bunch with roots in sealed plastic packaging. They are popular in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean food, and they are almost always eaten cooked in soups, hot pots, and stir-fried dishes.

CDC advises people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system to not eat raw enoki mushrooms. CDC also advises restaurants to not serve raw enoki mushrooms. Cook enoki mushrooms thoroughly to kill any foodborne germs.

In case you are experiencing Listeria monocytogenes symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
